On October 17 (Sun.) from 12:00 p.m., a tasting event of "freshly baked bread" was held at the processing center "Shokunin Kobo Palm" (Hokuryu-cho, Hokkaido) with the cooperation of Vie de France (head office: Tokyo).

This tasting event was organized by Mr. Nobuyuki Murakami, 68, who was appointed as a Hokuryu-cho Regional Development Cooperation Volunteer this May.

(Under the guidance of Mr. Masatsugu Mukai, Deputy General Manager and Ms. Naomi Nonomura, Manager of the Sales Department of Vie de France, 14 kinds of breads were prepared with the help of NPO Akarui Noho (Representative Yumiko Takebayashi, Hokuryu Town), people actually involved in baking bread at Road Station Akai Gawa and Urara Bakery (Akaigawa Village), and farmers from Hokuryu Town (NPO's cooperating members). The 14 kinds of breads and 200 pieces of breads were prepared with the cooperation of the following people.

Stories of the people involved
We took time out of our busy schedules to speak with Deputy Mayor Toshimasa Takahashi, Nobuyuki Murakami, and Hiroyo Nakamura.

We started talking about this project around July of this year, and in September, before the rice harvest, we got together to discuss it, and by early October the plan was finalized.
In this project, the dough for the first fermented and formed bread was provided by Vie de France Co. From now on, we will learn how to bake the bread and proceed with packaging, design, naming, and various other considerations.
If all goes well, the bread will be sold at stores in Hokuryu Hot Springs and commercial facilities such as Cocoa by the end of this year. There are many mothers in Hokuryu who can bake bread, so we hope to use this as a foundation for the creation of an original Hokuryu Town bread," says Nakamura.

Background of the Hokuryu Town Community Development Cooperation Volunteers
Nobuyuki Murakami, a native of Teshikaga Town in the Kushiro Province, became a Hokuryu-cho Community Development Cooperation Volunteer in May 2021.
Worked for 25 years at Yamaha Corporation in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. He was involved in the launch of the Kiroro Resort in Akaigawa Village. After leaving the company, he was asked by Hiroshi Akamatsu, the mayor of Akaigawa Village, with whom he had a relationship during his time at Kiroro Development, to cooperate in the establishment of "Roadside Station Akaigawa" and joined the Akaigawa Village Community Development Cooperation Team as a member.
At that time, as a roadside station, the company contributed to the development of original products such as "freshly baked bread" and "rice gelato (rice gelato made with milk from Akaigawa farms and Yukisayaka produced in Akaigawa)". Freshly baked bread is prepared and sold by mothers in Akaigawa Village under the guidance of Vie de France Co. The bakery continues to enjoy popularity as "Urara Bakery.
At the time, the council members of Teshio Town came to Akaigawa Village for an inspection tour. After explaining to them how we developed our original products, they asked me if I would be involved in the development of Teshio Roadside Station as a member of the Regional Development Cooperation Team, and I agreed. As a member of the Teshio Regional Development Cooperation Team, he was involved in the production of "Teshio Roadside Station. He was involved in the production of the "Ice Candle" and other projects.
At the time, Teshio Town had five members of the Regional Development Cooperation Volunteers. When one of the members attended a tourism-related conference in Sapporo, she met Tsutomu Samitsu, chairman of the Hokuryu-cho Sunflower Tourism Association, who was also attending the conference. The woman introduced Ms. Murakami to Mr. Samitsu, and they exchanged various opinions and hit it off. Through the connections between Teshio Town, Hokuryu Town, and the local development cooperative members, the conversation flowed smoothly, and Mr. Murakami became involved in improving the management of Sunflower Park Hokuryu Onsen as a member of the Hokuryu Town Local Development Cooperation Volunteers.
The impetus for the bread tasting event
I was involved in the development of a roadside station in Akaigawa Village. We were the first to sell freshly baked bread in Akaigawa Village. (With the cooperation of Vie de France, we held a tasting event of freshly baked bread in the gymnasium, and it was so popular that we opened a bakery, Urara Bakery, at the roadside station. In a village with a population of 1,000 at the time, 2,000 loaves of bread were sold each day. The bread was purchased not only by town residents but also by tourists visiting the roadside station.
As a member of the Hokuryu Town Regional Development Cooperation Team, I have been thinking about how to improve sales in order to improve the management of Sunflower Park Hokuryu. Therefore, we decided to promote the sale of "freshly baked bread" as the first of several projects we are considering. We felt that there was a demand for "freshly baked bread" in Hokuryu Town, so we proposed this project based on our past successful experience.
In planning the event, we were able to obtain the support of Akarui Noho, a non-profit organization run by local residents, which made it possible for us to hold this tasting event," Murakami said.
Pickle buffet" at the cafeteria in Minorikichi Hokuryu
The mothers of Hokuryu-cho each pickle their own original pickles at home, using home-grown vegetables. So now we are asking the town's mothers, 'Why don't you make pickles?' We are now asking the mothers in the town to join us.
In the future, we would like to hold a "pickle buffet" at the cafeteria in Minorikchi Hokuryu. We are thinking of a system where visitors can enjoy Sunflower Rice rice, miso soup, and pickles at the cafeteria, and purchase their favorite pickles.
I believe that if you have a 'playful spirit' that you find enjoyable, the people around you will find it enjoyable as well. In the future, I would like to plan a variety of interesting things that will help the residents of the town to live out their days with more vitality," says Murakami.
We want to create a town where the townspeople can be active and have fun!
We are amazed at the sincerity with which the town of Hokuryu responds to these new project proposals and acts promptly. It is not often that things progress so smoothly.
The discussions are progressing quickly, with Deputy Mayor Takahashi taking the lead in connecting each of us to the departments where we can do the work. I think Hokuryu Town is a very good town.
I am now 68 years old, but I would like to continue to do various things in my active life until I am 70 years old, and I would like to promote projects that can attract customers here in Hokuryu Town. 70 years old, I would like to move on to my next goal again.
We hope to develop a business that will help the energetic elderly people of this town find a sense of purpose in their lives.
It is a very enjoyable time for me to talk with the townspeople about various topics. The other day, I helped make "Sasa-dango" with the mothers. I was so happy to hear their comments, "We finished the work an hour early! I was so happy to hear that.
I hope that the people of the town will continue to do their best," said Murakami, who spoke of the many big dreams he has in mind.

When we were approached about selling freshly baked bread, the non-profit organization Akarui Nouhou in Hokuryu Town was willing to take on the project, so we went ahead with it. We also hope to increase overall sales at the Hokuryu Town Minoricchi Hokuryu direct sales of agricultural and livestock products, while taking into consideration the use of the cafeteria corner.
I hope that the bread sales will lead to the development of the cafeteria corner, where mothers can make pickles, omusubi (rice balls), miso soup, and other dishes using surplus vegetables," said Vice Mayor Takahashi.
It is a happy time for the residents of the town to join forces, cooperate with each other, and share a good time in a friendly atmosphere to keep their daily lives lively!
