The 4th Hokuryu Town Ice Candle 2025 was held at Sunflower Park Hokuryu Onsen for two days on February 15th (Sat) and 16th (Sun). Approximately 300 ice candles were lit up, creating a fantastic glow.

4th Hokuryu Town Ice Candle Festival 2025
As a first attempt this year, ice sculptures made by six students from a seminar at Hokkaido University of Education Asahikawa Campus, as well as snow sculptures made by Sergeant Hoshino Yuki of the Hekisui Police Station (Community Section, Community Affairs Division, Fukagawa Police Station, Asahikawa District, Hokkaido Prefectural Police) were unveiled.

Ice sculpture production
- This ice sculpture was made by six students from the Art Sculpture Seminar of Associate Professor Keiji Iwanaga of the Hokkaido University of Education Asahikawa Campus.
- 4th grade: Miyu Takanuma, Yunhi Kusayagi 3rd grade: Rina Tateda, Chiho Okubo 2nd grade: Akira Togashi, Aika Kiyosugi
- The design of the ice sculpture depicts a sunflower and a dragon, the symbols of Hokuryu Town. It took two days to carve the ice block according to that design. The most difficult part was the "dragon's horns" made of icicles.
- I took into consideration the perspective and adjusted the overall balance as I went along.
- This is the first time we have attempted a project of this scale!
- This is the second ice sculpture created by this group.
Snow Sculpture

"This snow sculpture is designed to feature Sunflower Saki from Hokuryu town. We received cooperation from the Numata Police Station and it took two days to create. We had a hard time making Sunflower Saki's face round. This snow sculpture expresses the wishes of the people of Hokuryu town for road safety," said Sergeant Hoshino.
A talk by the organizer, Nobuyuki Murakami
"This year's event has never been more special. Students from Hokkaido University of Education created ice sculptures, and Constable Hoshino of the Hekisui Police Substation created a snow sculpture with the message 'Road Safety'.
In addition, two students from Hokkaido Information University also helped out. It was a more lively event than usual, and I think the townspeople will enjoy it.
Due to global warming, it has been difficult to make ice candles this year, but there are still about 300 on display, including snow candles and works by elementary and junior high school students.
"When it's lit up, it will be a spectacular sight, so please look forward to it!" says Murakami.

A fantastical landscape of lit ice candles
Filled with limitless love, gratitude and prayer, the gentle light of the ice candles soothes the soul as they paint the night sky a deep navy blue.
