On Tuesday, August 13th, the Hokuryu Town Town Internship program began!
In the agricultural section, four members harvested and boxed watermelons at the farm of Takada Co., Ltd. Working hours were from 8:00 to 17:00, with breaks included.
Town Internship 2024 Agriculture Edition, Hokuryu Town, Hokkaido, at Takada Co., Ltd.
Harvesting in the watermelon greenhouse
At Takada Co., Ltd.'s farm, they cultivate small yellow watermelons called "Sunflower Watermelons" in nine 100m watermelon greenhouses, and "Summer Oranges," with their unusual orange flesh, in two 50m greenhouses.
After listening to the explanation from Chairman Akimitsu Takada, we left our belongings in the barn and headed to the watermelon greenhouse. With temperatures exceeding 30°C, the temperature inside the greenhouse was 37°C, like a sauna.
Try your hand at harvesting watermelons, aiming for the red fruit stick! Wiping away the sweat that's pouring out of you, you cut off the stem with scissors.
Boxed in the barn
After the harvest in the watermelon greenhouse is finished, we move to the barn and start packing the watermelons into boxes!
Box making
First, assemble the cardboard boxes and staple them together to make the box.

Watermelon polishing
After measuring the weight of the watermelons, they are lined up by size and carefully polished with towels to give them a glossy finish.
boxing
Depending on the size, we pack 3, 4, 5 or 6 watermelons into one box.
To prevent the watermelons from cracking or getting scratched, we will set the cardboard dividers to fit the shape of the watermelons.
Stamp
Once the boxes are packed, the number of items is stamped on them!

With boundless love, gratitude, and prayers, I am working on watermelons, experiencing the hardships and difficulties of cultivation and connecting with the farmers on a spiritual level.
