Manryu Elementary School 5th Grade "Rice Cultivation Experience" Rice harvesting (Takada Farm) and hanging rice on a rack (Manryu Elementary School) A valuable experience filled with joy and a sense of accomplishment!

Tuesday, September 24, 2024

On Thursday, September 19, from 10:00 a.m., ten fifth graders from Manryu Elementary School (Principal: Sadao Kamada) in Hokuryu Town enjoyed harvesting rice in the rice fields of Mr. Takada's company in Mitani, Hokuryu Town.

Rice harvesting (Takada Farm)

Four months have passed since the rice was planted in May. The rice has grown vigorously and has produced golden rice, which is harvested with a sickle, an old-fashioned method.

Today, you will harvest the rice that you planted in May.

The sickle is very sharp, so be careful not to cut your hands.

Grasp a bundle of rice, angle it at an angle, apply the sickle to the root, and mow it in a single stroke in a circle in front of you, following the bend of the sickle. When mowing, grip the top of the bundle of rice and be careful to keep the handle of the bundle of rice away from the blade of the kettle. Hold the top part and mow the bottom part," explains Mr. Takada carefully.

After taking pictures of the rice before harvesting with a tablet, we each picked up a sickle and began harvesting the rice.

The children seemed to be having a good time and were mowing quickly," Takata said.

I am happy because the small rice plants have grown to the point where we can eat them.
I couldn't harvest rice in one go at first, but once I got used to it, I was able to harvest it in one go, which was fun.
When I eat the finished rice, I want to savor it carefully because I made it myself," said the student.
