This year marks the ninth year of the "Setsuya Suzuki Luminarie 2023," an illumination of the garden at the home of Setsuya Suzuki, 71.

This year's theme is "Fat, Circle, Circle"!　It is the opening of a theme park of lights that will make the world go towards peace, brightness and brilliance. We interviewed Mr. Setsuya Suzuki about the creation of the illumination.

This year's theme is "circle. This year's theme is 'circle,' interspersed with 'smoothness,' 'maturity,' and so on.

In today's world, we see thieves, murderers, and wars at the end of the day. We hope that the world will become brighter and more rounded.

About 30 circles are placed throughout to represent the "circle" theme.

Mikoshi lanterns" revived after 30 years

And what I would like you to see the most is this piece of work, the "Andon (paper lantern)". This "Andon" was used about 30 years ago when there were many children at Hekisui Elementary School. The school was closed, and the "Andon" has been in Matsuura's warehouse for 30 years. I took it out of the warehouse, remodeled it, and arranged it as a "portable shrine lantern.

In addition, the main piece is called "Happo Bijin," which is displayed in a high position. It is the one that spreads out in all directions and yields to everyone. I was told by others that it is also called "Happo Bijin". I explained that "Happo Bijin" refers to something that is blocked by a triangular shape at the tip, but this one is spreading upward, hence the name "Happo Bijin.

The Leaning Tower of Pizza

And the work of the slanting tower was designed as a decorative "pizza" and installed at an angle, in reference to the world-famous "Leaning Tower of Pisa" (the bell tower of Pisa Cathedral in Pisa, Italy). We named it "Leaning Tower of Pizza" as if Pisa were a pizza.

Feel free to come inside.

Many of you who come to see the show every year think that you are only allowed to observe from the outside and are not allowed to go inside, but you are welcome to go inside and watch as much as you like.

However, there are both children and elderly people in the neighborhood, so please come inside and look around until about 10 pm.

Currently, the illumination setup is about 80% complete. The morning glories will continue to grow and you can visit until the end of September, which is about 100 days.

We have five to six people helping us in various ways this year, which is very helpful. There are many parts of the project that I could never do alone, so we are having a lot of fun working together," said Mr. Suzuki cheerfully.
