New Year's Greetings from Mayor Yutaka Sano of Hokuryu Town

message

Happy New Year to all the townspeople.

We hope you are in good health and welcoming the New Year of Reiwa 3.

Looking back at last year, it began as an Olympic year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a year full of completely unpredictable events. In order to protect the health and lives of our townspeople, we decided to cancel the Sunflower Festival, and at Himawari no Sato, we decided to take a year of rest to prepare for the post-COVID-19 era. With regard to agricultural crops, we were blessed with favorable weather, with growth generally progressing smoothly and few pests or diseases. Paddy rice was generally of good quality, with low protein content. However, with regard to buckwheat, the impact of COVID-19 led to a decline in eating out consumption and a drop in the distribution price of unpolished buckwheat, dealing a major blow to producers.

The town has also implemented premium gift certificates and regional promotion coupons, as well as support programs for small and medium-sized businesses and small-scale buckwheat production, and emergency support measures for buckwheat production, aimed at businesses and farmers who have been severely affected. Furthermore, to support children's learning and improve their learning environment, we are promoting the establishment of a learning device (PC or tablet) for each elementary and junior high school student, as well as a high-speed, high-capacity communication network. Going forward, we will continue to take measures to prevent infection and its spread, while working to build a system for the post-COVID era. We will continue to promote emergency dredging, riverbed excavation, and tree felling, utilizing disaster prevention and mitigation and national resilience projects.

Although the financial situation remains difficult, the "Hometown Support Donation" is expected to exceed 500 million yen, as in the previous year, thanks to the continued popularity of return gifts such as sunflower rice and Hokuryu melons. Going forward, we will continue to work to encourage many people to learn about and support Hokuryu Town through attractive town development and local specialties.

In order to realize town development that is possible only in a small town, we will share bright and big dreams and hopes like sunflowers with all our townspeople and move forward with town development, so we would appreciate your understanding and further participation in town administration.

In closing, I would like to wish you all continued good health and happiness in the New Year.
