The Hokkaido Shimbun Digital, an Internet site operated by the Hokkaido Shimbun (Sapporo City), has published an article (dated December 31) titled "Concerns about 'lack of qualified candidates' for the election of mayors in 34 municipalities in Hokkaido in 2012.

The article states, "At least 15 of the 34 municipalities have already fixed the dates for their mayoral elections. Of these, two towns, Hokuryu Town in the Sorachi region and Matsumae Town in the Watashima region, are expected to hold elections on February 4 and March 24, respectively," the article states.
