The Hokkaido Shimbun Digital, an Internet site operated by the Hokkaido Shimbun (Sapporo), has published an article (dated January 11) titled "Sorachi 7 Mayors to be Elected This Year Iwamizawa Mayor to be Elected in August.

The article states, "The election for the mayor of Hokuryu Town is scheduled to be announced on February 30 and the election to be held on February 4. Yutaka Sano, 72, currently serving his third term, announced at the regular town council meeting last September that he would not run. Hirokuni Kitase (62), representative director of the Hokuryu district of the Kita Sorachi Agricultural Cooperative, and Yasuhiro Sasaki (67), chairman of the town council, announced their intention to run in November and December of the same year, respectively.
