The Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau launched the "Scenic Byway Hokkaido" initiative in 2005 to create attractive tourist spaces. There are 13 scenic byways and two candidate routes in Hokkaido, with approximately 400 organizations currently engaged in activities.
The Sorachi Scenic Byway will use the distinctive national highway that runs through the jurisdiction of 10 cities and 14 towns as its main route, the Do-o Expressway that runs north to south, and the two rivers, the Ishikari River and the Sorachi River.
The Sorachi Scenic Byway is run under the motto "Sorachiing" (continuous connection in the present tense), and involves 10 cities, 14 towns, and 22 organizations. Hokuryu Town's Sunflower Tourism Association joined in 2024 (Reiwa 6).
