Hokkaido Information University: Encounter with Projection Mapping

This Hokkaido Information University projection mapping was made possible through a collaboration with Hokkaido Information University, planned by two Hokuryu Town regional revitalization cooperation team members, Nobuyuki Murakami (69 years old) and Yui Sasaki (22 years old).

"While thinking about an unprecedented event for Hokuryu Town, I learned that students from Hokkaido Information University were planning to do projection mapping at the Snow Festival.

"I asked them, not expecting it to work, but they agreed and we were able to make it happen. As an information university, we hadn't held events for about two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the timing was perfect for the discussions to proceed," said Murakami.

"We wanted the video to have an image that was characteristic of Hokuryu Town, and when we told them about the existence of Hokuryu Taiko, we quickly decided that it might be interesting, as there had never been a collaboration with taiko before. Discussions began around July, and in August, people involved came to Sunflower Village, where they saw the sunflowers in full bloom, which expanded our imagination.

I think the work is distinctively Hokuryu Town, while also conveying the fun of projection mapping.

"Through this screening, we hope that people who have heard of it but have never seen it will be able to learn what projection mapping is, while also enhancing the image of Hokuryu Town and providing them with an exciting and thrilling experience," said Sasaki.

Visit to town for video confirmation and sound matching test: October 10th (Monday, national holiday)

Prior to the performance, on Monday, October 10th (national holiday), Associate Professor Oshima from Hokkaido Information University and nine students from his seminar came to town for a meeting. They projected the image onto the shutters inside the Hokuryu Town Himawari Tourist Center and performed a sound check with the Hokuryu Taiko drums.

Projected onto the wall of Sunflower Park Hotel (40m wide, 10m high)

Projection mapping is a technique that uses projection equipment such as a projector to project three-dimensional images onto buildings.

The building on which the projection was performed this time was the Sunflower Park Hotel, and the three-dimensional image was projected onto the entire wall of the building (40m wide, 10m high).

A character typical of Hokuryu Town

The projected images were created by nine students as part of their seminar activities at Hokkaido Information University under the guidance of Associate Professor Oshima Keitaro and Lecturer Kawahara Dai, combining animated images inspired by Hokuryu Town.

The event will feature a variety of stunning images that capture the essence of Hokuryu Town, including an animated video of a girl beating a drum to the sound of a live Hokuryu Taiko drum, footage of a sunflower field, the Hokuryu Town local heroes appearing along with the theme song of "Agri Fighter North Dragon," and the cute Hokuryu Town character "Himawari Saki-chan" peeking out of the window of the Sunflower Park Hotel.

A mysterious collaboration between the Hokuryu Taiko performance "Ryusho" and video

The Hokuryu Taiko song "Ryusho" will be played along with the video!

Light images shoot out like a beating heart in time with the heroic sound of the Hokuryu Taiko drums!!!

The sound of live drumming, which can only be felt in this very moment, resonates in your heart, shaking your whole body, and then intertwines with the three-dimensional light images to create a moving moment!

"Collaborating with Hokuryu Taiko is a rare endeavor that has almost never been done before, and I think it's going to be quite interesting.
This work combines animation and taiko drumming, and I created the animation footage to go with footage of past taiko drumming performances that I borrowed. The actual performance changes each time, so I adjusted the speed of the footage to match the sound of the performance.

On the first day, we were a bit worried about an unexpected problem that occurred just before the event started, but I think the students also grew a little by experiencing the chaos that is so typical of events.
"I would like to apologize to all the visitors for keeping them waiting. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to all the people who came to see the exhibition," said Professor Oshima.

We would like to express our gratitude to the projection mapping that will take you to a mysterious parallel world!

With boundless love, gratitude and prayers, we offer this magnificent projection mapping that will take you to a mysterious, otherworldly space, a parallel world.
