"This year has started calmly and quietly. This week, there was a heavy snowstorm on Saturday and Sunday, and I felt that winters in Hokkaido are harsh. As I have been stating today, on January 10th, we reached 5,000 days without a traffic accident fatality, a milestone that began on Friday, May 4th, 2007.

This is a great joy for the townspeople and a great achievement for the town. It is the result of the deep understanding and cooperation of the townspeople regarding traffic safety. I also believe it is thanks to the tireless efforts of the many people involved in traffic safety, including the Fukagawa Police Station Chief and the Numata Police Station Headquarters Chief. I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation.

"Today marks an opportunity for us to work together as townspeople to promote road safety, aiming for another 6,000 days. We would appreciate your continued guidance. Thank you very much for joining us today," said Mayor Yutaka Sano.

"The last traffic fatality to have occurred in 5,000 days was on Constitution Memorial Day, May 3, 2007 (Heisei 19).

Last year, there were two traffic accidents in Hokuryu Town, resulting in three injuries. Hokuryu Town has now achieved 5,000 days without a traffic fatality, making it the fifth consecutive day in the entire prefecture. We would like to see Hokkaido continue to experience this kind of situation.

"Hokuryu Town has now achieved 5,000 days without a traffic fatality for 13 years and 8 months, and I believe this is thanks to the efforts of everyone. I ask for your continued efforts in the future. Together with the police, we would like to continue to achieve zero traffic fatalities, so I ask for your continued support," said Police Chief Norio Sakamoto.

Mr. Yoshikazu Itagaki, Chairman of the Hokuryu Town Traffic Safety Association, spoke about the high level of awareness and unity of Hokuryu town residents regarding traffic safety.

"The Hokuryu Town Traffic Safety Association is involved in a variety of activities, including traffic safety town meetings, the 'Jumbo Human Wave Campaign,' a street traffic safety awareness campaign in which everyone in the town participates, from nursery school children to members of the senior citizens' club, and a street traffic safety awareness campaign for tourists at the Sunflower Festival.

In Hokuryu Town, all 800 households in the town are members of the Traffic Safety Association and pay membership fees. I feel that the power of cooperation among all the townspeople as members is great.

"I believe that thanks to the guidance of the police station chief, as well as the senior citizens' club and neighborhood association, many residents of the town are highly aware of traffic safety. Furthermore, I believe that the police station chiefs in the town patrol the town diligently on a daily basis also contribute to an accident-free environment," said Chairman Itagaki Yoshikazu in a passionate speech.

Everyone together!

We send our boundless love, gratitude, and prayers to the unity of the Hokuryu town residents as they work seriously together to prevent traffic accidents, and to the passionate spirit of the townspeople who have achieved 5,000 days without a traffic fatality, realizing the preciousness of life.
