View this post on Instagram Searching for fatwood during a # break Fatwood is the resin (pine tar) that has collected and hardened at the base of dead pine trees. It is highly flammable and is apparently used outdoors as kindling. I found a hard, amber-colored piece that looked like it could be fatwood from the base or thick part of a branch of a dead, rotting larch tree, scraped it off and tried to light it. There was a sizzling sound of burning resin and it burned quite a bit, but I got the impression that it doesn't have as much oil as fatwood from authentic red pine and other species. There are lots of dead larch trees, so I think I'll keep looking for some more. But that amber color is so beautiful. # Fatwood # Mountain play # Forestry # Small forestry # Hokkaido # Forest # Forest # Hokkaido timber # Firewood # Hodagi # Hokkaido forestry # Self-logging forestry # Sustainable living # Living with nature # Satoyama management # Country living # Forestry for living with nature # Under natural conditions under natureA post shared by (@shizenka2020) – September 24, 2020, 8:36 PM PDT
