Initially, sunflowers were planted on 1.4km of farmland, 20m wide and 1.4km long, from the Wa district to Wa city and from Sunflower Park to Hekisui city, with subsidies from the town as a tourist landscape crop. After that, sunflowers were planted as part of the rural environment improvement project of the "Multifunctionality Payment Project."
In February 2012, the town received the Hokkaido Industrial Contribution Award for its conservation and management of farmland and waterways, as well as for its town-wide sunflower planting, which serves as a symbol of town development.
