We have a track record of hydroponically cultivating over 4,000 varieties both domestically and internationally, and have also obtained a US patent.

Why must agriculture be changed?

At the beginning of his speech, Representative Nakajima started by discussing global food issues.

From the 15th to the 18th centuries, the world population increased by 100 million people each century. However, between the 18th and 19th centuries, the population suddenly swelled 15 times. The modern agricultural methods we practice today—using compost, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium for sowing, thinning, fertilizing, and harvesting—are techniques that were established in the late 1800s. In other words, these techniques may be able to cope with a population increase of 100 million, but they cannot cope with a 15-fold increase. And this is compounded by extreme weather events.

I'm studying hard because I believe that if we can create something that can be made quickly and reliably, we can guarantee a food supply.

All 525 closed-type hydroponic cultivation facilities across Japan are currently operating at a loss. The biggest reason is electricity costs. While explaining the difficulty of operating plant factories under Japan's electricity rates, which are the second highest among developed countries, he said that the shift in thinking—that "if you produce quickly, electricity costs will be lower"—was the starting point for all of their technological development.

Lightless photosynthesis: The mechanism of the Enocore system

The core of the technology for which Representative Nakajima obtained a US patent in 2017 lies in the seemingly contradictory idea of "promoting photosynthesis without using light."

By physically shaking the roots, plants grow rapidly. This technique has reduced the time it takes to grow 150g of lettuce from 29 days in version 1 to 25 days in version 2, and to 20 days in version 3.

According to research from the University of Tokyo, the physiological limit for lettuce is 17 days, meaning they are "just three days away" from this stage. "Once we can do this, I'll put down the microphone and retire like Momoe Yamaguchi," said Nakajima with a smile.

Improvement of modern agricultural methods

Produce 60-80 melons from a single plant; expanding to multiple varieties.

As an application of hydroponics, a system for high-yielding melons in greenhouses was also introduced. While typically only 4 to 6 melons can be harvested from a single plant, this technology allows for the harvesting of 60 to 80 melons with a sugar content of 14.6 degrees or higher from a single plant. A greenhouse in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, has introduced 20 of these systems and has achieved sales of melons for 2,500 yen each. This system allows for four harvests per year.

Furthermore, innovative approaches that would excite the younger generation were introduced one after another, such as a technique that shortens the wasabi cultivation period from 1.5 years to 4 months by applying a voltage of 280V to the roots.

"Type-G," a biostimulant material that increases yield by 30%.

In the latter half of the presentation, the soil biostimulant material "Type-G" was introduced. It is a pure bio-material containing 514 types of bacteria, and is a proven technology that has undergone testing with 46 farmers and 400 varieties.

There are two main effects.

Cultivation period shortened by 30%:Crops that take 100 days to harvest can be harvested in the same quantity in 70 days.

Yield increased by 30% during the same period:If you cultivate for 100 days, you can harvest 30% more.

500 types of bacteria decompose the causes of continuous cropping problems (nitrate nitrogen, harmful substances, etc.), and 14 types of bacteria promote plant growth. The bacteria work with the compost as a bed, and the effects last for about six months. Pig manure, cow manure, chicken manure, and horse manure can each be used as a base individually (mixing is not possible). A factory is planned to be built in Toyoura Town, Hokkaido, to promote its use in the region, and there are plans to expand to Iwamizawa afterward.

In demonstrations in the rice field, the combination of soil mixing and top dressing showed the most stable effect, achieving a uniform 30% increase in yield across a 1-tan (approximately 0.1 hectare) rice paddy. Furthermore, a case was reported in which the method was used to improve soil contaminated with sweet potato "root rot" disease in Kagoshima, completely eliminating the pathogen from the soil.

"Our goal is to create a Type-G that allows for harvesting the day after planting the seeds. This would eliminate the risk for farmers," said CEO Nakajima, vowing to further develop this technology, which is still in version 1.

Participants listening attentively

Q&A: How to make use of the land of Hokuryu

Following the lecture, participants asked many insightful questions.

When asked about how to obtain the Type-G in Hokkaido, President Nakajima replied, "It is currently available for purchase, but the transportation costs from Honshu are high. We will be building a factory in Toyoura Town this year, so a stable supply within Hokkaido will begin."

Regarding hydroponic cultivation of melons and watermelons, they explained, "We plan to cultivate them in greenhouses that utilize sunlight, and we can handle all types of fruit and vegetables in these greenhouses. We have experience growing 250 cucumbers from a single plant." They also gave a reassuring answer regarding the issue of heating costs during Hokkaido's winters, stating, "We plan to showcase our system, which addresses these issues, at our showroom in Toyoura."

Regarding biostimulants, CEO Nakajima pointed out, "There are more than 20 companies on the market with products that are merely nominal, and only two companies are purely focused on biotechnology." He conveyed a simple and honest stance: "First, we want you to prepare a comparison product and test it. We will provide the test sample free of charge. If you see results, please buy it. That's all."

At the venue, practical discussions unique to Hokuryu Town unfolded, including ideas such as utilizing a junior high school facility scheduled for closure as a base for hydroponics, and a plan to introduce new technologies from soil preparation through collaboration between agriculture and the construction industry.

Q&A

Q&A

Closing remarks: Minoru Nagai, Representative Director of Hokuryu District, JA Kitasorachi

Closing remarks: Minoru Nagai, Representative Director of Hokuryu District, JA Kitasorachi

In his closing remarks, Minoru Nagai, Representative Director of the Hokuryu District of JA Kitasorachi, spoke about the background behind the planning of this seminar.

Hokuryu Town itself is a small town with only about 1,500 inhabitants, and it is a town where primary industries are the main source of income. The question is how to survive in such circumstances. In the future, with the global population explosion, I believe we will face a real food war where people will be fighting over food resources. In that context, I think this has become a guide for the future in terms of how even a small town like ours can survive.

While expressing our respect for Representative Nakajima's challenging spirit and diligence,

I think it would be great if we could advance agriculture in a way that utilizes hydroponics and Type-G technology.

He concluded the seminar by powerfully expressing his determination for the future of agriculture in Hokuryu Town.

<figure class="wp-caption
