The Hokuryu Town Physical Disability Welfare Association General Meeting and New Year's Party were held at the Hokuryu Town Senior Citizens Welfare Center from 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 15, 2024.<\/p>\n

The event was attended by a total of eight people, including Chairman Yamashita Yoshiharu, Vice Chairman Motobu Iwao, and members of the secretariat.<\/p>\n

Mayor Yutaka Sano and Resident Affairs Section Chief Naohiro Hosokawa attended the New Year's party and gave speeches.<\/p>\n

"As you all know, the world's population is declining, and so is the population of Hokuryu. Furthermore, the number of members of the Association for People with Disabilities and other organizations is also declining. It is also difficult to determine the number of people with disabilities in the town.<\/p>\n

There are two types of people with physical disabilities, depending on how they are perceived.
\nOne is someone who accepts and recognizes disabilities and takes the initiative to enjoy themselves in that environment.
\nThe other type are people who want to hide their disability or don't want to reveal it.<\/p>\n

I think our future challenge is for us, people with physical disabilities, to take action to remove the barriers that people have that try to hide their disabilities.<\/p>\n

Every year, a tournament for people with disabilities is held in the Sorachi area, but due to various circumstances, it is expected to be canceled from this year. Instead, it seems that another event will be held.<\/p>\n

The physically disabled people in Hokuryu Town are not young either.
\nI hope that people can live happily in life, even with disabilities. I hope that we can all enjoy various events together this year as well. Thank you for your support."<\/p>\n

    "Happy New Year again.
    \nWe welcomed the new year full of hope, saw the first sunrise of the year, and were just thinking that this year would be a good one when, on New Year's Day, an earthquake occurred on the Noto Peninsula, causing great damage.
    \nOn the 2nd, a collision occurred between a Japan Airlines plane and a Japan Coast Guard plane, and the situation continued to escalate, putting the world at risk.
    \nThe ruling party won the Taiwanese presidential election, and the issue of slush funds from political party revenues also erupted in the Japanese government.<\/p>\n

    Meanwhile, in our town, we are relieved that three members of the city council were elected uncontested in the by-elections.
    \nFurthermore, there will be a mayoral election in February. The town will be divided into two by the two candidates, but there is a possibility that the town will gradually come together and move in a positive direction, so I am very hopeful.<\/p>\n

    Hokuryu Town's population will decline in the future, but we will continue to build the town as best we can, continue to work hard for people with disabilities, and enjoy life as a person with a disability.<\/p>\n

    Mayor Sano and the head of the Resident Affairs Division always attend the New Year's party of the Association for the Physically Disabled. I believe this is proof that the mayor and the division chief have a strong passion for the physically disabled.<\/p>\n

    Even though the number of people is small and the organization is very small, Hokuryu Town has continued to cultivate a warm and caring administration for many years.<\/p>\n

    No matter how few people there are, we would like to continue as long as possible. In the future, we would like to move forward with dreams and hopes in various activities. Thank you very much."<\/p>\n

    "Happy New Year everyone.
    \nIt's been a tough winter. I thought the New Year would be relatively calm and a good one, but now it's snowing every day and we're facing a really tough winter.
    \nThe real season is yet to come, so please take care of your health and enjoy a warm spring.<\/p>\n

    As Chairman Yamashita mentioned, a major earthquake measuring 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale occurred on the evening of New Year's Day on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, claiming many lives. Those affected are still living in great hardship, with no sign of recovery in sight. We offer a moment of silence for those who lost their lives, and pray for the speedy recovery of those affected.<\/p>\n

    As you know, this year's zodiac sign is the Dragon. Dragons are said to grow powerfully into the sky and overcome any hardship they face. It is also said to be a year of strong conviction.<\/p>\n

    I am convinced that the Year of the Dragon will be a good year for the development of Hokuryu Town, and that it will be a year in which we can build a good town. I hope that it will be a year in which we take on all sorts of challenges with positivity and boldness.<\/p>\n

    Hokuryu Town is currently experiencing a declining population, a lack of workers in the agricultural industry, and many problems with local public transportation that cannot be solved, causing great inconvenience to residents and students commuting to school. I hope that this year will be a year of energy filled with big dreams and hopes, and the courage of sunflowers.<\/p>\n

    In terms of local public transportation, the Sorachi Chuo Bus bound for Fukagawa will be discontinued at the end of March, but for the time being it is planned to operate as far as Imoseushicho, and then connect to Takikawa and Fukagawa. Eventually, once a driver is decided, we plan to create a system where the bus will operate directly and travel to Fukagawa, Takikawa, and within the town.<\/p>\n

    It is difficult for me to say anything as I will be retiring in just over a month, but the deputy mayor and other staff members are currently giving it careful consideration. We would like to establish a local public transportation system as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

    I hope that this year will be a wonderful one for all of you, and I would like to conclude my New Year's greetings with this.<\/p>\n

    Due to unforeseen circumstances, the traditional New Year's party dinner and games were cancelled and instead participants were provided with takeaway lunches. The lunches were handmade by Yahachi, a restaurant in Hokuryu Town.<\/p>\n

    With boundless love, gratitude, and prayers, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Hokuryu Town Welfare Association for the Physically Disabled, which accepts people with any kind of disability as they are, walks alongside them, and enjoys life to the fullest, cheerfully and energetically.<\/p>\n
