On Monday, June 8th, from 1:30pm, the Sapporo Development and Construction Department Fukagawa Road Office, Hokuryu Town Hall, and Hokuryu Construction Industry Association jointly carried out sunflower seeding, trash collection, and weeding in the parking lot of the Hokuryu Himawari Interchange (IC) on the Fukagawa-Rumoi Expressway.<\/p>\n

This volunteer activity has been carried out every year since the Hokuryu Himawari IC opened in 2005 (Heisei 17).<\/p>\n

On the day, about 20 people gathered. They worked together to carefully sow sunflower seeds in the flower beds set up in the interchange's parking lot. They also picked up trash and mowed the surrounding area.

Volunteer Activities<\/h2>\n

This activity is being led by the Hokuryu Construction Industry Association Labor Committee and is being carried out as part of the committee's activities.<\/p>\n

"Since the Sunflower Festival will not be held this year, I hope that the sunflowers blooming at this interchange will brighten and cheer up the town a little," said Shinichi Sasaki, chairman of the Labor Relations Committee.

The flower beds were filled with soft, fluffy soil, and sunflower seeds were carefully and meticulously scattered one by one at regular intervals.

At the same time, trash was picked up and the grass was cut around the Himawari IC parking lot, creating a clean environment.

Yasuhiro Sasaki, Chairman of the Hokuryu Construction Industry Association, gave a speech before the event began, explaining the names of the interchanges.<\/p>\n

"Before it opened, this IC was called the 'Hokuryu Interchange.' So the town, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Hokuryu Construction Industry Association requested that the name be changed to 'Hokuryu Sunflower Interchange,' adding a 'sunflower,' which is the symbol of Hokuryu.<\/p>\n

At the time, there had been no example of an interchange name containing anything other than a place name. However, thanks to the great efforts of the Sapporo Development and Construction Department Fukagawa Road Office, Hokuryu Town's request was approved.<\/p>\n

The IC name "Hokuryu Himawari IC" which includes the name of the place and the name of the town's product is the first of its kind in the country, and I have heard that it is still the only IC with this name.

Since the interchange opened, the sunflower cultivation, grass cutting, and trash collection have been going on for 15 years.<\/p>\n

"Although this year's Sunflower Festival has been canceled, the desire of townspeople to make sunflowers bloom in each district of town is spreading. This event is one such initiative," said Chairman Sasaki Yasuhiro.
