On Tuesday, December 21st, from 5:30pm, in the pouring snow, the 1st Hokuryu Kendama Festival, sponsored by the Hokuryu Kendama Club (representative: Naoki Kishi), was held in the large hall on the second floor of the Hokuryu Town Community Center. Approximately 20 energetic elementary and junior high school students from Hokuryu Town participated.<\/p>\n

History of the Establishment of the Hokuryu Kendama Club<\/h2>\n

The Hokuryu Kendama Club was founded by Naoki Kishi (29 years old), an employee of the Hokuryu Town Board of Education. Activities began on September 14th of this year with the aim of promoting interaction between local people through kendama and creating a society filled with daily enjoyment. Activities are held every Tuesday, and currently there are many days when the number of participants, including children from the town, exceeds 20.<\/p>\n

The impetus for founding the Hokuryu Kendama Club came from an event held in July 2020 as part of a children and elderly interaction project. When Kishi invited Atsuma Kendama Club representative Retsu Saito, also known as "Kendama Kenchan," he was impressed by the children's engrossed enjoyment of playing with kendama.<\/p>\n\n

Mr. Kishi, who had experience with Kendama for some time, later heard from Mr. Saito of Atsuma Kendama Club and decided to establish a Kendama club in Hokuryu Town.<\/p>\n

Children's interest is growing, coupled with the recent popularity of Kendama, such as "Tsutsuken" and Fuji TV's "Kendama Christmas 2021."<\/p>\n

"KENDAMA" booms worldwide<\/h2>\n

Recently, Kendama seems to be spreading worldwide. It all started around 2006 when a professional skier who was visiting Japan brought back a Kendama as a souvenir.
