Hokuryu Sunflower Rice New Rice Festival 2024
Sales of new rice have started amid a severe shortage of rice. This year's Hokkaido rice is growing well. Planting conditions are on par with the average, but the price of the new rice in stores seems to be soaring.

In recent years, the grade of Hokkaido rice has improved, with an increasing number of extremely good-tasting rice receiving a "Special A" rating in the eating quality rankings.
The key to improving the quality of Hokkaido rice is still to stabilize rice quality by sorting rice before shipping.
As a way to ensure consistent quality, we introduced a color sorter and grain sorter. This has enabled us to establish a system for sorting and shipping high quality rice.
However, until then, farmers had been shipping with a certain range of quality. Under these circumstances, concerns arose that setting strict quality standards would reduce the volume of shipments.
In response to these voices, we decided to work on shipping only rice above a certain quality level, as we knew that farmers as a whole were trying to improve the quality of their rice.
Through these efforts, we are now able to offer safe, secure, high-grain, low-protein Hokkaido rice.
Today, the high quality of Hokkaido rice is highly appreciated by consumers," said head of the cooperative, Mr. Iwata.
A color sorter is a machine that identifies differences in the color of rice grains and automatically separates good quality rice from defective rice. Mainly used in the rice milling process, it can remove foreign matter such as colored grains, cracked grains, and green unripe grains.
